The largest climate data archive in the U.S. is offline. So here's the full list.
America’s archive of billion dollar disasters is hosted in a data center in Asheville, North Carolina. But last week, Hurricane Helene took the data center offline.
According to NOAA, the facility still has electricity, but it doesn’t have water. Until those services are restored, it will continue to be offline. That could take weeks.
Right before the storm hit, I was working on a story that required me to download the full list of billion dollar disasters. So I thought I’d share it publicly for journalists, researchers, and other folks that need this data.
